Despite the January transfer window drawing ever closer, there is a quiet air around the Football Transfer Tavern today – that is until a sportinglife correspondent pops in for a quick game of darts and lets slip that Tony Pulis is determined to keep his big names this transfer window – namely Manchester United and Liverpool target Asmir Begovic.
The goal keeping merry-go-round at Old Trafford has been more unpredictable than the Chelsea managerial one of late and it is clear that Sir Alex Ferguson has little confidence in either of his top two keepers David De Gea and Anders Lindegaard. Likewise as a punter quickly points out, Brendan Rodgers has been pondering the situation at Liverpool with Pepe Reina not what he once was and Brad Jones never looking like claiming the number one spot on a regular basis.
Bosnian international Begovic has impressed a great deal for Stoke who have risen sharply up the table in the last few weeks and are notorious for their solid back line – and the Potters keeper has been a major part of the positive stat that the Potters have only conceeded 12 goals in 15 games.
Pulis himself conceded that it may be difficult to say no to a big club but “there will be no sales of any of the big players at this club during the window.” Something that will cause Stoke fans to breathe a sigh of relief – but it does raise an interesting question over just who two of England’s most historic clubs will cast their eye on next.
