For the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern, nothing but a Premier League title victory this season will be good enough…
However, it doesn’t appear that many pundits are backing them to complete that feat, with former player Paul Merson – now of Sky Sports – expecting them to finish some way off top spot this season.
Making his annual predictions, Merson has revealed that he expects Man City to win the league, whilst he’s backing Arsenal to get even worse this season – with a sixth place finish apparently on the cards. Describing them as a ‘long way off’, Merson clearly isn’t feeling very confident ahead of the next season.
It’s certainly a bold suggestion, especially given the players that Wenger has signed, but it’s hard to argue that they won’t struggle this season. They’ve recruited well, of course, but so has every other top Premier League team.
That said, Arsenal’s victory against Chelsea has given the fans in the Transfer Tavern cause for excitement ahead of the new season, so they aren’t reading into Merson’s comments too much.
Whilst Paul Merson isn’t renowned for being accurate in his predictions, his comments do come with a bit of credibility. He makes some good points, not least surrounding the future of Alexis Sanchez, and if the Gunners do lose the Chilean they could well struggle.
If they manage to hang on to him, though, our landlord thinks that a top four finish is a genuine possibility for the Gunners.
That said, it’s going to be a real battle at the top of the table this season, and so anything could happen.
