Newcastle United supporters have been relatively quiet in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side go down 1-0 at Burnley on Monday night, thus suffering a fourth Premier League defeat of the campaign.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Lancashire-based outfit off the back of a three-match unbeaten run, having drawn against Liverpool and Southampton before edging past Crystal Palace 1-0 at St James’ Park. However, they were unable to keep their solid run going as a Jeff Hendrick strike 16 minutes from the end secured a 1-0 success for Sean Dyche’s men, and in turn moved them above the Magpies into seventh place in the Premier League table.
Thus, many of our resident Newcastle fans have been despondent in the Tavern this week, and they may well agree with Paul Merson’s recent comments regarding their efforts at Turf Moor in his weekly predictions column for Sky Sports.
The 49-year-old is best known for his spell at Arsenal between 1985 and 1997, in which time he played over 350 games and helped the Gunners to two First Division titles, as well as the domestic cup double back in 1993.
The former midfielder also played at the likes of Aston Villa, Portsmouth, and Walsall but has since gone into punditry post-retirement, and is well-known for his weekly predictions section for Sky Sports.
And this week’s comments are again likely to intrigue Newcastle fans, as Merson has slammed the Magpies for their efforts at Burnley on Monday, but has still backed them to beat Bournemouth this weekend.
He said: ‘I was really disappointed with Newcastle on Monday night (in their 1-0 loss at Burnley) if I’m being honest, the only plan they looked like having was Jonjo Shelvey.
‘It was a game you thought, ‘go and try and win here and kick on,’ but it did not look good to me.
‘Bournemouth got a good result at Stoke, but I am going to go 2-1 to Newcastle.’
That is only the second time that the 49-year-old has backed Newcastle to win this season, having also done so against Burnley, so Magpies supporters will be hoping he does indeed get it right this weekend.
Landlord’s verdict: Much has been made of Paul Merson’s Premier League predictions this season, not least from Newcastle United supporters who had to wait until the tenth game of the campaign for the 49-year-old to back their side for victory.
It didn’t happen though as they lost 1-0 at Burnley, and that disappointing defeat was subject to criticism from the former midfielder this week, yet that hasn’t stopped him backing the Magpies to beat Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Although based on last week’s defeat, Newcastle fans may hope that he starts going against their side, especially if they do indeed fail to beat Eddie Howe’s Cherries this weekend.
