The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were expecting the worst against Tottenham on Sunday…
The Blues have had a tough start to the season, whilst Tottenham seemed to have continued their fine form from the last campaign – making the Lilywhites the firm favourites as the two sides met at Wembley on Sunday.
However, in typical Chelsea fashion, the Blues pulled out a spirited performance to crush the hopes of the Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern, with one Chelsea player impressing in particular.
That player, of course, was Marcos Alonso. The Spaniard scored both of the Blues’ goals on the day, and his first strike was arguably one of the Premier League goals of the season so far.
Discussing the defender in his Team of the Week, Garth Crooks has echoed the sentiments of the fans in the Transfer Tavern – describing the Spaniard’s performance as ‘immense’
Crooks said: “The wing-back could have easily ducked the moment and let Willian – also a dead-ball specialist – take the free-kick. But he didn’t, he took control of the situation and buried it”.
Continuing, he said: “The Spaniard didn’t stop there either – his overall contribution to this Chelsea performance was immense. How this lad hasn’t yet emulated his father and grandfather and represented Spain is a mystery to me”.
Alonso has been an often underrated member of the Chelsea first team, but after that performance – as Crooks says – there can be no doubting his quality.
Marcos Alonso has been one of the players touted with being replaced this summer, but the defender proved against Tottenham that he won’t go down without a fight.
Whilst Chelsea looked good generally, Alonso was a cut above the rest – and he deserves so much credit for that.
If he continues performing like that, Conte will have no choice but to keep starting him.
