Pundit: This is what Tottenham star Dele Alli must do to become more like Steven Gerrard

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern think that Dele Alli might be one of the Premier League’s best midfielders…

He has been on fire this year, but BBC pundit Garth Crooks think that one thing is lacking from the Englishman’s game.

Whilst Crooks included Alli in his Team of the Week, he said: “The only feature I don’t like about Alli’s game is his obsession with making contact with his opponent in the opposition’s penalty area and making out he’s been impeded”.

He continued: “If he wants to be a Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard, he must eradicate that from his game and promote the things that make people want to pay good money to see him”.

Indeed, Crooks seems to be complimenting Alli, in that he is comparing him to the likes of Gerrard and Lampard. Both midfielders were arguably the greatest of their generation, and Dele Alli can certainly reach that level. But he needs to to get the rashness out of his game in order to achieve that. Both of those before him carried themselves elegantly throughout games, and the 20-year-old needs to replicate that.

Certainly, all of the other components of Alli’s game serve him well. He has scored 14 goals in the Premier League this season, a record that even Frank Lampard would be proud of, whilst his 4 assists certainly place him alongside Steven Gerrard for his influence in the middle of the park.

Indeed, Gerrard was a top player, though – so can Alli really reach his level? Have your say…
