It’s been a tough start to the season for the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern…
After the success of last season, with Liverpool finishing in the top four, the impact that Jurgen Klopp was having was evident – and it had shown on the pitch.
However, this term, they haven’t had as much success. Domestically, they’re still in the running, though their 8th place current standing would have you thinking otherwise – but problems are slowly arising at Anfield.
They’re already out of the Carabao Cup, having lost to Leicester City in the week, and a demolition at the hands of Man City has left the mood around the Red section of the Transfer Tavern feeling rather glum.
This, according to Paul Merson, is one of the reasons why their upcoming clash against Leicester City is so important. Indeed, whilst Merson has predicted a win for Liverpool against the Foxes, he has piled the pressure upon Klopp and co.
He said: “If Liverpool put their chances away, they win this match and they will need three points because the Manchester clubs are getting away from them already”.
Clearly, if Liverpool play well and are efficient they should win the game, that is without doubt, but the need for the Reds to pick up three points is as important as ever this weekend. They’re already five points behind both Man City and Man Utd, and it must be expected that both clubs will win their respective fixtures this weekend.
If they go into the next week of the season eight points behind their rivals, it could lead to panic stations at Anfield.
Talking about being in or out of the title race at this stage is often hyperbolic, but Liverpool won’t want to fall too far behind.
It’s a long race, but playing catch-up from the first turn is the last thing that Liverpool want to do, and so a win against Leicester City is the only result that should be forthcoming.
They can’t afford to lose.
