The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were left feeling frustrated on Saturday evening…
The Reds suffered their second successive draw over the weekend, with Burnley managing to hold Jurgen Klopp’s side. This result, of course, follows their 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Champions League.
Though these are not necessarily bad results, they do suggest a worrying trend for the Reds, and their inability to win games is definitely a problem that Jurgen Klopp needs to solve.
A number of factors can be pointed to, not least their lack of goalscoring prowess, but BBC Pundit Garth Crooks has a particularly interesting view.
He thinks that Liverpool’s problems are in defence. The shining light of the back-line, according to Crooks, is Joel Matip – who he has included in his Team of the Week. He was less than complimentary about his partners at the back, though.
Crooks said: “Joel Matip is a very willing defender and without the Cameroon centre-back’s exploits against Burnley, Liverpool would almost certainly have lost”.
He continued: “Matip is an honest competitor capable of producing excellent performances on his day. But for goodness sake, he needs a defence around him”.
It’s hard to disagree with him here, as Matip is the one player that continues to perform at the back no matter the circumstances. Other players like Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno and even the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner have struggled when picked at the back, and this is something that needs to be solved. For now, it often seems as if he is the only one in-form at the back.
Liverpool’s defence is clearly the weak spot of their team, and that’s why they were so keen to land Virgil van Dijk over the summer.
That didn’t happen, though, and now they’re paying the price.
It’s still early doors, and Klopp still has a way to go until he needs to panic, but he needs to focus on getting the best out of his defence. It could cost the Reds this season if it isn’t sorted.
