Pundit: This Tottenham player would have been a great summer signing for Everton

The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t happy with the start to the season their side has made…

It’s been a tough few weeks for the Toffees, and they’ve not been helped by the poor run of form that a number of their players have been suffering through.

These issues have come up and down the pitch, but the attack is particularly suffering. Wayne Rooney still isn’t back to his best, whilst other new signing Sandro Ramirez is struggling in front of goal.

Both players, who were brought in to help replace Romelu Lukaku, have struggled to adapt under Ronald Koeman, and this, according to Stan Collymore – who was writing for the Mirror – is where Koeman’s problems lie. More specifically, Collymore feels as though other players were more suitable to replacing Lukaku.

Collymore said: “It’s impossible to take 24, 25 goals a season out of a side and not pay a price for it. And it’s coming back to haunt them big time at the minute”.

He added: “A Fernando Llorente, an Olivier Giroud or a Christian Benteke should have been their [Everton’s] No.1 target after letting the big Belgian [Romelu Lukaku] go”.

Everton had a number of options to go for this summer, and whilst they may or may not have been able to land them, it would certainly have been worth the effort to try. In Fernando Llorente’s case, he actually made a move over the summer, and he has looked good so far.

Of course, he’s already in his 30s, but he has proven his worth as a prolific Premier League goalscorer, and the importance of that cannot be undervalued.

Alas, it appears as though Everton are instead going to have to settle for a lack of goals this term.

Landlord’s Verdict

A move for Llorente may have been tough, but it does make sense.

Olivier Giroud likely didn’t want to leave Arsenal, particularly for a side that won’t battle at the top, whilst Crystal Palace wouldn’t want to sell Christian Benteke under any circumstances. Llorente was available, and he’s a guaranteed goalscorer.

Everton are paying the ultimate price for their mistakes now.
