Pundit: Tottenham might not beat West Ham this weekend, here’s why

It has been a tough start to the season for the Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern…

Though they’ve made a decent start in the Champions League, they haven’t been so fortunate in the Premier League – having already dropped a few places back in the title race.

It is early doors, of course, and nothing is lost quite yet, but having picked up just two wins in their first five games, it’s clear that improvement is needed.

However, BBC pundit┬áMark Lawrenson doesn’t believe that the improvement will be coming this weekend, having predicted a 1-1 draw between the Lilywhites and their next opponents, West Ham.

Basing his argument on Tottenham’s poor form and, conversely, West Ham’s rising form, it’s easy to see why Lawrenson is backing the London Stadium-based side to do well. He said: “I don’t think things will get any easier for them [Spurs] at the weekend…Slaven Bilic’s side have taken four points from their past two matches and I think they will get something from this game too”.

Of course, the game holds extra significance given what happened between the two clubs last season, with West Ham essentially ending Tottenham’s title charge with a win over their rivals.

This is a game that Tottenham really need to win, but with West Ham clearly a team on the up, as Lawro notes, it’s going to be very difficult indeed.

Landlord’s Verdict

West Ham had a tough start to the season, and whilst their current 17th place position in the league is very precarious, a win could take them to within one point of Tottenham.

A win would mean that Tottenham will maintain the pressure on the teams above them, though, and so there is everything to play for.

Current form, though, dictates that Tottenham won’t find it easy.
