Leicester City have established themselves as a solid Premier League club in recent years and they can boast a very talented squad despite having to sell some of their best players.
Both N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez have moved on to pastures new but Leicester’s squad is still stacked with talent. The likes of Wilfred Ndidi, Jamie Vardy, Kelechi Iheanacho and Demarai Gray are all talents who could hold their own at a top-6 club, but the latter has struggled for consistency in his career so far.
Gray’s perfect blend of electric speed and dazzling dribbling have served as a menace for Premier League defenders since he moved to Leicester from Birmingham in January 2016, but he’s yet to reach the level which he is capable of – an opinion which is shared by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.
Speaking ahead of England’s clash with Switzerland last night, Redknapp said “I find him (Gray) a really interesting player because he’s got so much talent, so much speed. I’d hate to play against him but I just want him to do it more often”.
Indeed, Gray’s exciting build up play is seldom backed up by a clinical edge in the final-third: 7 goals and 11 assists from 104 Leicester appearances proves he needs to work on his end product.
At just 22-years-of-age there’s not too much pressure on Gray to add the finishing touches to his game, but it’s fair to say that this could be a make or break season for Leicester’s wing-wizard.
An impressive campaign in which he finally adds the consistency to his game which Redknapp has alluded to could well convince a top-6 club to sign him, but another mediocre return will force fans and pundits to ask questions about his credentials to thrive in the Premier League.
Redknapp was absolutely right to call for Gray to find his best form on a regular basis and it’s time for him to step up a gear at the King Power Stadium.
