Manchester City kick-off their Champions League campaign against Lyon tonight at the Etihad Stadium as one of the favourites to win the competition.
There is a growing feeling that Man City cannot be considered one of the true heavyweights in world football until they have lifted the greatest prize of all. The Champions League eludes the club but with the current crop of players and Pep Guardiola at the helm there’s no doubt they have the tools for success.
Th group stage draw was kind to City last year and they’ve been handed another comfortable looking group with Lyon, Shakhtar Donetsk and Hoffenheim making up Group F.
After seeing Lyon stutter to just 7 points from their opening 5 fixtures City are certainly hot-favourites for the meeting at the Etihad Stadium this evening, and Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas seems to think a demolition is set to take place in Manchester.
Indeed, Nicholas delivered his pre-match prediction ahead of the fixture via his column on Sky Sports and he tipped City to record a 4-0 victory and Gabriel Jesus (valued at £72 million by Transfermarkt) to steal the headlines with a brace.
Jesus has a decent record in Europe for Man City with 4 goals and 1 assist from 9 appearances thus far, and he will certainly be eager to add to that tally after finding the net just once from his first 5 appearances this season.
The fact Guardiola opted to withdraw Sergio Aguero after just 54 minutes against Fulham on Sunday suggests that the Argentine was being saved for Lyon, so there’s every chance the South American pairing could be lining up alongside each other at the tip of City’s attack this evening.
