Liverpool had just one representative in the England starting XI which faced Spain on Monday evening, but he certainly did the Reds faithful proud with his performance.
That man was, of course, Joe Gomez – a player who is slowly establishing himself as one of the most respected young talents on the continent. Gomez has been in fine form for Liverpool this season alongside Virgil van Dijk, and his soaring reputation continued to rise on his 4th start for the Three Lions.
Gomez missed the entirety of England’s World Cup campaign through injury but there is almost no doubt he would have been on the plane had he been fully fit. His performance yesterday evening against a potent attacking outfit who put 6 past England’s semi-final opponents, Croatia, hinted that Southgate’s back-three would have benefited from his presence in the summer.
He was typically alert to potential danger and able to glide across the turf with his blistering pace to mop up in England’s defensive third, and BBC pundit Phil McNulty acknowledged the quality of his performance in his post-match analysis.
‘Joe Gomez, Liverpool’s 21-year-old defender and Tottenham midfield man Harry Winks, just 22, came in and excelled.’
Gomez (valued at £19.8 million by Transfermarkt) was certainly not error-free on the night as nervous mistakes crept into his game, but his overall display exuded a maturity well beyond his years.
At just 21-years-of-age it’s beginning to appear as if both Liverpool and England have a player of immense quality on their hands, and the fact he is just getting started is incredibly encouraging for both Jurgen Klopp and Southgate.
John Terry and Rio Ferdinand are now figures of the past and vacancies are open in England’s squad to fill the void left by the iconic pairing.
But with John Stones beginning to assert himself as one of the Premier League’s best and Gomez looking increasingly more assured with every passing fixture, the future looks bright for England’s defensive options.
