Liverpool have enjoyed a flawless opening to the season with 6 wins to report from 6 fixtures in all-competitions.
After falling short of a title challenge and losing in the Champions League final last season, the Liverpool supporters are eager to see Jurgen Klopp finally lift his first piece of silverware this season. The German boss is knocking on the door and it appears he has finally found a winning formula which balances Liverpool’s electric style of attacking football with defensive solidity.
Perhaps the scariest aspect of Liverpool’s start to the season – at least from the perspective of their title rivals – is that they are yet to drop a single point despite the fact Mo Salah has clearly been a yard off the pace.
Salah was central to everything Liverpool did well in the final-third last season but he’s struggled to come close to matching the level he set for himself on his debut campaign.
Whilst speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT on Wednesday, Tony Cascarino discussed Salah’s start to the season and his bizarre reaction to Roberto Firmino’s last gasp strike against PSG.
Although Cascarino was largely critical of Salah for his performances this season, he tipped him to rediscover the form which enabled him to score 44 goals in all-competitions last season.
Cascarino said of Salah: “Liverpool fans are totally with him. Why? Because of his work-rate. His attitude to it Jim is to try and run out of this indifferent period he’s having. That is the only thing he can do.”
The message from Cascarino is that if Salah continues to work hard on the pitch then it’s only a matter of time before he rediscovers the form which endeared him to the Reds faithful last season.
It’s certainly too early to label Salah a one season wonder, but if he continues to struggle to emulate the form he showed last season then he may well end up losing his place – temporarily at least – to summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri, so his high work-rate needs to translate into glowing performances sooner rather than later.
