Quality defender suggests he’ll snub Arsenal for Serie A move

Mehdi BenatiaArsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern that were hoping of stealing a move for one of Europe’s best defenders have seen their dreams shattered by the player himself, who hinted at a move elsewhere.

Sky Sports Italia quotes Bayern Munich centre-back Mehdi Benatia as stating he’d be open to rejoining former side Roma, despite leaving the club on bad terms previously.

“I would certainly do it. Everyone knows that Rome is a special place for me. So many people have remained in my heart.”

Bayern, who are chasing a treble this season but must overcome Atletico Madrid in tonight’s Champions League semi-final, may lose Benatia this summer if they move for Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, who is said to have informed the German side of his intention to join the Bavarian club.

ESPN says Arsenal are keen on the services of Moroccan international Benatia but the player’s willingness to return to Roma, where he made a name for himself, hand Arsene Wenger a tough-test persuading him to seek a new challenge in the Premier League.

Our landlord believes Arsenal should definitely push for a move though, as he sees Benatia as the perfect defensive partner for Laurent Koscielny.
