Racism: Football’s Worst Fans For The Worst of Football Crimes

Racism and hooliganism have been two of the worst plagues to curse football over the decades. While clubs have overcome this from within, there remain small sections of fans from various clubs all around the world, who continue to spew vile, racist language from the stands.

Sometimes it’s just a certain person being an absolute moron, but at other times, many fans unite to promote a disgusting crime that should have been removed from the game a long time ago. Here are the top five:

  • Lazio fans

Italian football has long been marred by the stain of racism, one of the main culprits being the fans of Lazio football club. They certainly didn’t do themselves any favour in this weeks Europa League tie with Tottenham Hotspur, aiming monkey chants in to Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon. All of this happened in front of UEFA President Platini, and must surely be the wake up call to help remove racism from all of football.

  • Rangers/Celtic fans

it is better to include these two as a singular group, as most of the racism is directed to each other. Rangers and Celtic fans have been guilty of both standard racism, and sectarianism racism. Incidents include, but are not limited to El Hadjii Diouf being subjected to monkey chants by Celtic fans,  or Celtic boss Neil Lennon being attacked by anti Irish racism as explosive packages were sent to him, as well as Maurice Edu receiving racist abuse from his own supporters. The racist effect in Scotland is a long way from being cured.

  • Chelsea fans

Of course this does not refer to all Chelsea fans, but reports are circulating that Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel was subjected to racist tweets by several supporters, over his costly error in the Champions League class against Juventus. This may be a relative one off incident for Blues fans, but such material to a player remains inexcusable. I’m sure many remember the Paul Canoville incident all those years ago.

  • Poland/Ukraine

Eastern Bloc countries have always been rather slow on clearing up racism in football. Unfortunately, small pockets of fans became one of the focal points during Euro 2012. Reports of the Dutch football team being racially hassled at their training camp, Russian and Poles colliding over issues stemming nearly a century, England fans being set up in ‘England only zones’ to tone down the possibility of racial violence. It hardly seems fair to judge two countries in such a way for small pockets of ignorant idiots, but it is those idiots, that tarnish the name of Eastern European Nations.

  • Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs fans are generally very tolerant in football. However, they took their hatred of Sol Campbell to new heights after his controversial transfer to arch rivals Arsenal. Not only was he subjected to racial chanting from the fans who once idolised him, but he was also the victim of many homophobic slurs too, another controversial subject in football terms. Hating a player for turning their back on you is fine, but racist and homophobic cheap shots certainly are not.
