Rafa Benitez admits Achraf Lazaar may be involved with first-team

Rafa Benitez may have given one of his Newcastle United misfits a lifeline to getting his career back on track at St. James’ Park.

According to a report by the Shields Gazette, the manager has revealed that Achraf Lazaar may have a chance to pull on the Newcastle shirt once again.

The Morocco international has not featured for the Toon Army for well over a year, however, he was named in the 25-man Premier League squad list.

The defender is currently training with the Under-23 side after a move to Genoa collapsed at the final moment, but Benitez has stated he could feature in his plans after admitting why he put him in the squad.

“He will stay with the Under-23s – we’ll see how he gets on,” he told the Shields Gazette.

“We cannot say ‘no’ and we cannot say ‘yes’ – we have to see how he’s doing and then we decide.

“The reason we put him in the squad is because we know it’s a weak position, and we have no back-up, so it’s just in case.”

The Verdict:

Lazaar is still unlikely to feature for Newcastle as he remains with the Under-23s, however, Benitez’s comments will give the left-back some hope of breaking into the first-team.

For the £900k-rated defender to do so, as per Transfermarkt, his chance would likely come through an injury or suspension to Paul Dummett and the manager deciding he cannot use anybody else in that position.

The 26-year-old would have been expecting to leave the club in the summer transfer window, however, he could be given a new chance to show Benitez what he can do in the senior squad.
