Newcastle United will be looking to add a number of players this summer as they will want to build on this season’s impressive campaign and fans in the Transfer Tavern will be watching with expectant eyes.
The Magpies were thankful for a number of loan acquisitions who enabled the club to move away from the relegation zone and into the safety of mid-table during the second-half of the season to cap-off a wonderful year for Rafa Benitez’s men.
The locals in the bar will be desperate to keep the Spaniard at the club as they see him a vital component to their efforts, however, he has warned the club’s hierarchy that they will need to spend big money to ensure they can remain in the top-flight next year.
Benitez has told Mike Ashley that the club will need to break the £16 million transfer record they set after signing Michael Owen from Real Madrid in 2005, in order to sign a striker who can get into double figures next season.
“If you want to bring a striker with a guarantee of more than 10 to 15 goals per season, you have to pay money for him for sure,” Benitez told the Daily Mail.
“In this market, that is more than £16m. We have a lot of scouts watching games and we have all the software, all the stats, everything that you can have on any team.
“We have all these things in place and we have meetings and we talk about players, then after you can achieve this or that.”
The Newcastle fans in the Tavern will be in agreement with Benitez that the club should look to break their 13-year-old transfer record if they wish to sign a striker who can help them find the back of the net on a more consistent basis next season.
