Newcastle United will want to make a number of additions to their side during the summer transfer window and fans in the Transfer Tavern will be hoping the club can do all they can to convince one man to join them.
The Magpies have had a hugely successful 2018, which has seen them go from relegation contenders to searching for a top-ten finish thanks to some inspired loan signings by Rafa Benitez in January.
The Spaniard signed Chelsea’s Kenedy, Leicester City’s Islam Slimani and Sparta Prague’s Martin Dubravka on loan deals and will be wanting to sign them all on permanent contracts after they improved Newcastle’s form, however, he has now set his eyes on an even more ambitious swoop.
According to reports in the Express, Benitez has opened the door for Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta to join him at St. James’ Park, after the midfielder revealed he would leave the Nou Camp after his 22-year stay.
The Catalan great has admitted he would like to extend his playing career and Benitez has joked that he “could come here” when giving his thoughts about the player.
“Along with so many great names, he was one of Barcelona’s key players,” he told the Express.
“He is a great player, a nice person, and I hope he does well in his career.
“Maybe he could come here?”
Newcastle fans in the Tavern will realise this was a tongue-in-cheek gesture from Benitez, however, a number of the locals would love to see the club try an ambitious swoop for the World Cup winner.
