The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern are still concerned about relegation this season. After winning promotion back to the Premier League last year, the short term goal for Rafa Benitez’s men is to stay afloat in the top flight.
Newcastle are currently 14th with a three point gap over the bottom three. Benitez knows that plenty more work is still needed to ensure survival and he will undoubtedly be scouring the transfer market for possible additions this month.
According to The Sun, Pepe Reina is one of Benitez’s targets this January. Benitez has been eyeing a reunion with Reina since the summer but was frustrated in the summer as his bid to sign him fell short.
Napoli want more than £10m for the goalkeeper and his wages of £100,000 per week could prove a stumbling block with owner Mike Ashley reluctant to invest. The 35-year-old has vast experience, having played for Liverpool for nine years and also having had spells with Bayern Munich, Villarreal and Barcelona.
Benitez wants a goalkeeper and a striker in this window and he needs to convince Ashley to spend this money on Reina.
Ashley needs to put his hand in his pocket because a good goalkeeper could be the difference between relegation and survival. Reina is a top class goalkeeper and still has it despite his age. The 36-cap Spain international would be an upgrade on Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot and this move makes sense for the Magpies.
