Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern will be looking for the club to build upon their first season back in the Premier League with a number of additions this summer.
The Magpies are on course for a mid-table finish despite teetering above the relegation zone for much of the season, however, Rafa Benitez admits his side are still lacking a “quality” signing in a key area of the pitch.
Having watched the Toon Army go head-to-head with Tottenham Hotspur, the manager made the admission that he needs a striker to come in and take the chances they consistently fail to convert.
“We know that we need to keep the same team spirit, the same mentality, the same commitment from all these players and add a little bit more quality to help and be sure that in these kind of games you take your chances and win the games.”
The Newcastle fans in the Tavern will be in complete agreement with what Benitez has stated, with Ayoze Perez their leading scorer with just six strikes.
The club signed Islam Slimani on loan from Leicester City in January to try and rectify the situation, however, he has failed to make an impact in a five-month period with the club which has been hampered by injury and suspension.
The Magpies did try and sign a striker on a permanent deal during the mid-season window, however, they could not get a deal across the line, and the punters will be expecting the board to work harder to ensure they are not in the same position once again next season.
