Rafa Benitez lauds club lynchpin following landmark achievement – report

Newcastle United will be aiming to have another strong season next year and the fans in the Transfer Tavern will agree with the comments being made by Rafa Benitez about one of their stars.

The Magpies boss has praised Jamaal Lascelles on reaching 100 appearances for the club he captains and believes he will get even better with experience. The defender was crucial to the Toon Army’s promotion effort last year and he has put in some outstanding performances once again to help guide Newcastle away from the relegation zone.

Benitez – who gave the defender the armband – has admitted he hopes the player will remain in the north-east for a long period of time, despite interest from some of the league’s biggest clubs in a year when many believe his performances merit a spot on the England plane to the World Cup this summer.

“It’s a great achievement for any young player,” he told the Newcastle Chronicle.

“He is a great character and he is learning and improving.

“So 100 games in a good number.

“Hopefully, he can be here for 500 games!

“And I hope he can improve every year.”
