The West Ham United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club can secure the services of a world class manager to replace David Moyes this summer.
Despite successfully steering the Hammers clear of relegation this season, David Moyes departed the club earlier this week. His departure has been met with a mixed response by the supporters lining up our bar, but the general consensus is that the club are capable of attracting a higher calibre manager this summer.
Plenty of names have been touted as potential candidates to succeed Moyes at the London Stadium and the most recent candidate to emerge has raised plenty of eyebrows in the tavern. According to Sky Sports, West Ham are planning on making an approach for Newcastle United’s Rafa Benitez who recently guided the Magpies to a 10th place finish in the Premier League.
The Irons’ interest in Benitez is completely understandable considering the phenomenal progress Newcastle have made under his watchful eye this season, but their interest should not start and end with the manager. Although Benitez deserves great credit for his achievement on Tyneside, plenty of individual players are also due a special mention, and none more so than Jonjo Shelvey (valued at £9 million by Transfermarkt).
Shelvey will be disappointed to have missed out on England selection for the World Cup this summer after Gareth Southgate opted for Fabian Delph and Ruben Loftus Cheek instead of the controversial play-maker. During the final third of the season, Shelvey was a constant source of creativity at the heart of Newcastle’s midfield with his extensive range of passing – something which West Ham have been lacking in recent years.
West Ham have been short of both quantity and quality in the centre of the park this season, so if they eventually manage to persuade Benitez to take over at the London Stadium, they should encourage the Champions League winner to bring his colleague with him to the capital.
