Newcastle United have managed to get just one point from their opening four Premier League matches this season.
The Magpies have already had a number of tough fixtures, having played against Tottenham Hotspur, Cardiff City, Chelsea and Manchester City prior to the international break.
Benitez’s side have played well in those games, despite having only got a point from their game against the Bluebirds.
Speaking to the Shields Gazette, the Spaniard revealed their place in the bottom three at this stage may have been expected.
“Being in the bottom three is something you might expect when you look at our fixtures,” he said.
Things do not get any easier for Newcastle this weekend as they will meet Arsenal at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
Having looked at their opening fixtures, you would find it difficult to argue with Benitez’s statement.
However, there will be some optimism around St. James’ Park as the Magpies have not played as badly as the Premier League table would suggest.
The Toon Army played very well in their three defeats and were unfortunate not to have come away with points in some of those games, whilst they had the opportunity to take all three against Cardiff in the final minutes of the game.
If Newcastle continue to play the way they are, they will surely be well away from the relegation zone and could look to replicate last season’s success once again.
