Newcastle United were held to a goalless draw against Cardiff City and their manager has issued a stern warning to his players.
Benitez witnessed his side go down to ten men, miss a penalty in the last minutes of the game and has seen his team take just one point from their opening two matches, with three of last season’s top six in their next three league games.
“I told the players that we have to fight in every game, and fight until the end of the season,” he said to the Newcastle Chronicle.
“It is a simple message, but it is also a very clear one. For us, these kind of games that are physical, when from the first minute we were making mistakes – and then we improved – it is only going to difficult.”
He also revealed that they will need to work harder than others due to the lack of spending this summer, whilst their Premier League rivals spent a considerable amount more.
“Other teams have spent a lot of money on players so it’s a new competition and we have to reach the same standards, if not higher, again,” he added.
Newcastle will have felt that they should have taken all three points from their visit to Wales after the penalty they were awarded.
However, they will certainly need to improve in their next three games if they are to come away with anything, as they face Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.
It’s a strong and simple message from the Spaniard, who has an untold amount of experience in the Premier League, and if they do not start to raise their performances, they could find themselves in a relegation scrap in what will be a very long season at St. James’ Park.
