Raheem Sterling could suffer from the arrival of £22.5m-rated winger at Man City

The Manchester City fans have been celebrating in the Transfer Tavern during the last 24 hours after West Bromwich Albion’s 1-0 victory at Old Trafford handed their side the Premier League title with 5 matches left to spare.

Manchester United spared their blushes when they overturned a 2 goal deficit to delay their local-rivals’ title party with a 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium last weekend, but they failed to make them wait any longer on Sunday afternoon as they were humbled at home against a rock-bottom West Brom side. The result enabled City to claim their third Premier League title and Pep Guardiola’s first as manager of the club long before the end of a phenomenal season.

Guardiola will have a huge task on his hands this summer in the transfer market, as he will need to manage the expectations of his current squad when identifying targets to purse. City’s main objective next season will be to improve on their Champions League performance and, according to The Sun, City have already identified Crystal Palace’s Wilfired Zaha as a player who can help them achieve that aim.

Zaha (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt) has generated plenty of interest throughout the Premier League for his enchanting performances for the Eagles during the past two seasons, so City’s decision to join the race for his services is hardly surprising given both the quality of his performances and the club’s lack of options in wide positions.

Although City have quality in abundance throughout the squad, they are lacking in quantity somewhat. Guardiola only has two natural wide players to call upon, namely Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling, whilst the likes of David Silva and Bernardo Silva have also been deployed out wide on a handful of occasions this season.

With that to consider, signing Zaha would undoubtedly solve a problem for City in the summer and his arrival could put Raheem Sterling’s place in the starting line-up under threat next season. Sterling has been in sensational for the club this season without facing an overly intense battle for a starting berth, but Zaha’s arrival would serve to change the dynamic at the Etihad.

Like Sterling, Zaha can play through the middle or out on both wings, so there’s no doubt they would be in direct competition with one another to force their way into Guardiola’s starting eleven. On current form Sterling should have no problem fending off competition for his place in the first-team, but adding Zaha to the equation at the beginning of a new season will certainly give him something extra to think about.
