The Manchester City fans have been delighted by the progress made by Ilkay Gundogan this season since he returned from a cruciate ligament injury, but recent reports suggest his future at the Etihad is far from certain.
If reports are to be believed then it’s fair to assume that Pep Guardiola is in the market for a new central-midfield player who has the potential to succeed Fernandinho in City’s anchor role in the years to come. The Brazilian is showing little sign of reaching his sell-by-date at the age of 33, but Guardiola will want to ensure he has a ready-made replacement when he eventually begins to show signs of regression.
However, the arrival of a new centre-midfielder could potentially upset one of their current maestros, namely Ilkay Gundogan (valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt) and force him to move away from the club, especially if reports from Italy prove to be true.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Inter Milan are in the market for a new central midfield player this summer, and Gundogan has emerged as a surprise target for the Serie A giants who are also considering a move for Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic.
The report claims “Nerazzurri executives still are following: Ilkay Gündogan”, despite the fact he established himself as a key figure in City’s squad during the course of their double-winning season.
The Manchester City supporters are desperately hoping that Gundogan will remain at the club this summer as they believe his presence will play a crucial role in their bid for the Champions League next season.
However, they can sympathise with the fact that fresh arrivals at City could force Gundogan to play nothing more than a bit-part role at the club – which would represent a huge waste of talent considering the extent of the German international’s ability.
