Things are about to get really interesting at Crystal Palace, with the south London club potentially facing an uphill battle to keep hold of Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer.
A ploy to scare the Premier League heavyweights off? Perhaps. But it would not be a surprise to see a club with Manchester United’s financial clout fork out that sort of money in the end, though one ex-pro cannot believe such a fee is even being discussed.
“It is madness, absolute madness,” Ray Parlour told talkSPORT. “I really like him, I think he’s an excellent player and I’ve seen him on quite a few occasions. His defending is very good and he gets forward. But for £65 million, it’s crazy.”
It is a lot of money, clearly not reflecting Wan-Bissaka’s actual ability. But obviously, from Crystal Palace’s point of view, they have got to try to deter suitors.
And as we have seen in the last few transfer windows, full-backs and defenders overall, are going for £50m plus.
For elite teams as well in this day and age of football, the role of the full-back is growing in significance. So while it is a ridiculous amount of money being mentioned, Parlour and everyone else should not be surprised to see Wan-Bissaka and other defenders command fees that forwards would not even go for a few years ago.
