Real Madrid are desperate to sign a new centre back following a bad injury to Pepe and Ricardo Carvalho is top of their list according to the Daily Mail. The paper reports that Real president Florentino Perez is a long-time admirer of the Portuguese defender and is hoping to seal a deal which could see former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy heading for Stamford Bridge.
Van Nistelrooy proved a great goalscorer for Real but fell out of favour this summer after an influx of summer signings lost him his place in the team but he is still regarded as a dangerous predator in the footballing world and has been linked with a number of clubs, many of whom are in the Premiership. Real hope that the absence of Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou in the African Cup of Nations in January will lead to Chelsea accepting to swap Carvalho for van Nistelrooy plus a lowered fee. Real know the need to strengthen and sporting director Jorge Valdano admitted
“We appreciate that we have an opportunity to expand our staff in January in order to make the squad more comfortable and we will discuss this. We cannot rule it out but first we will have to look at the market.”
Carvalho was reportedly eager to leave Chelsea last summer after injuries had limited his playing time for the club but has made himself John Terry’s first choice partner again this season and is said to be happy at the club. Interest from Real could excite the Portuguese defender though and he would surely consider the Spanish giants should a bid come in. Chelsea are under no obligations to sell but may be willing to negotiate with Real in order to aid future transfer dealings between the clubs.
