Real Madrid boss reveals Liverpool almost signed world superstar

bale3Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are shocked to hear quotes from former manager Rafael Benitez that suggest the Reds almost signed one of the world’s most valuable players.

Benitez, who led Liverpool to their fifth Champions League crown in 2005, has claimed that he tried to sign Gareth Bale as a 17-year-old in 2006.

“Back in 2006 I went to see Bolton-Southampton. We transferred a player to Southampton but they wouldn’t give us Bale. Then when we tried to buy him, we couldn’t. I’ve known for a long time he was a great player.”

Bale eventually moved to Tottenham Hotspur, before a big-money move to Real Madrid; where he now stars under the guidance of Benitez, who is looking to dislodge Barcelona at the top of Spanish football after the Catalan side won an unprecedented second treble last season.

The Welsh wizard has also led his country to next summer’s European Championship, their first in history, whilst he scored in Real’s successful finals in the Champions League and Copa Del Rey in 2014.

Liverpool fans are imagining a world where Bale plied his trade in their famous colours, believing they would have won more than the 2012 League Cup this decade had they managed to pull-off this major coup.

Reds fans, would Gareth Bale have won you the Premier League? Let us know in the comments below!
