For all of the quality that Real contain in there squad, with Gonzalo Higuain out, Karim Benzema is the only recognised centre-forward in the entire first team squad.
With Benzema’s performances of late being below par, Jose Mourinho has been forced to play Cristiano Ronaldo up front against Getafe and Kaka up top against Levante in recent games.
Reports from Spanish Press monster, Marca, state that Mourinho has openly said he will drop Benzema if his form does not improve. However, that will leave him with a major problem of who to replace the Frenchman with.
The fact Mourinho has played both Cristiano Ronaldo & Kaka there show that he sees them as potential options. Ronaldo certainly so as, with the lack of quality strikers the Portuguese national side has, I believe he should be playing up front for them.
Other options muted by Marca include German World Cup star, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria. However, all those options are mere stopgaps particularly for a club of Real’s ambitions.
As a result, it would be no surprise for me if they headed back into the transfer market, were Benzema’s bad form to continue.
Their biggest problem is the fact that Edin Dzeko, the biggest name available this month, has already been snapped off the market, which means that Jose will have to search harder for his man.
The obvious name could well be Fernando Llorente. However, other possibilities include Mario Gomez and Edison Cavani.
Another possibility is Wayne Rooney though; he may have signed that new contract and withdrawn his wish to leave, but Ferguson has got rid of everyone else that ever crossed him and he may use that new contract to get a huge wad of money in return for him.
