Here in the Football Transfer Tavern one of the main topics of debate since the closure of the transfer window last Monday has been whether Gareth Bale was really worth £86 millilon.
Real Madrid paid Tottenham a new world record fee for his services on deadline day and Los Blancos will be hoping he makes an instant impact in La Liga.
Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane has now joined in the debate by stating that it is ‘incomprehensible’ that the club paid a world record £86 million to sign the Welshman according to Mail Online.
However the French international, who now works as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant coach at the Bernabeu, confirms that is only because no player is worth that amount of money, rather than an attack on Bale as a player.
Bale has made the switch from White Hart Lane to the Spanish club after Spurs’ Daniel Levy finally agreed to sell the Welsh international.
Zidane, who once broke the world transfer record after his £46.6 million transfer to the Bernabeu, said “I said then I was not worth this.”
Zidane joined the nine-time European champions in 2001 for a then record fee of £46.6 million. However that figure appears like a small amount in comparison to Cristano Ronaldo’s transfer to Madrid from Manchester United in 2009 and now Bale’s £86 million move from England.
Bale’s transfer may have left an absence of world class talent in the Premier League, that kicks off again this weekend after the international break, but Arsenal fans in the tavern are hoping that Mesut Ozil will be the man to provide the spark that makes the English team one of the best in the world once more.
How many goals will Gareth Bale hit in La Liga this season? 20? 30? Submit your amount below.
