Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern had remained optimistic of their chances of signing John Stones in January after being rebuffed by Everton several times this summer.
But their optimism has taken a real turn for the worse after hearing a rumour from the Mirror that Real Madrid are also interested in the England centre-half, particularly if current defender Raphael Varane is prised away from the Bernabeu.
Chelsea had three bids turned down by the Toffees throughout the course of the summer with them reported to have been in excess of £35m, only to be told that the 21-year-old was not for sale at any price.
Stones has recently been in negotiations with Everton over a new contract at the club, but will only sign one if they include a release clause of £38m. This you would think pave the way for his exit in the near future. This was good news to our Chelsea fans as they believed it would only be a matter of time before Stones made the move to West London!
However the move could no longer be as straight forward as it seemed as Rafael Benitez is rumoured to be lining up Stones as a replacement for Varane, should someone stump up the cash to meet their asking price for the French international.
A move to Spain would make him one of the few English players playing abroad. Following in the steps of England legends Micheal Owen and David Beckham who also made the move in their careers.
Would moving to the Bernabeu be a good move for John Stones? Let us know what you think below!
