Clocking off time at The Transfer Tavern sees Carlos D. Salas from MARCA rushing in to tell us of the latest plans by Real Madrid in their struggle to sign Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso.
According to the Spanish paper, the saga over Alonso’s protracted tranfer to the Bernabeu is nearing the final furlong with his inaction on the Reds’ pre-season tour of Asia showing that Rafael Benitez is prepared to enter negotiations with the free-spending Real.
Los Blancos are keen to sign Alonso up immediately asthey believe he is the ‘missing link’ in their star-studded midfield and it appears that they are reducing their initial offer of €27 million to €25m. This is due to the insistence of the Anfield outfit that Alonso would not leave the club for less than €36 million.
The reason for Real’s reduced offer is due to the fact that the player himself has told Benitez that he wants to leave Merseyside in favour of a return to his homeland, despite a strong show of support by supporters in Asia when the Reds played in Thailand and Singapore.
When asked about the future of Alonso, Benitez refused to comment on the playmaker’s Anfield future, insisting that it is up to the player whether or not to comment on the speculation surrounding him.
“It’s a question that you have to ask him,” said the Liverpool boss.
“Honestly, we’ve been talking about this for two months but I think that it is a question for him and not for us.
“He has three years on his contract and we know he is a great player – that’s why we signed him and renewed his contract. So you have to ask him.”
So which variety of liquid refreshment led to this tale? Will Real get their man for less than the asking price? Will Benitez sell grant Alonso’s wish to move to the Bernabeu? Should this rumour Fly or Die?
