The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been bitterly disappointed with their season so far, and they are growing concerned about their ambitions for next season due to recent reports from Spain.
Jose Mourinho’s side have been left in a cloud of dust behind the new Premier League champions Manchester City this season, so they will need to strengthen significantly this summer in order to bridge the gulf in class between the clubs. Pep Guardiola invested heavily in defensive acquisitions last summer by signing Ederson, Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy, and if United want to reach the standard set by their local-rivals they would be wise to follow a similar path.
One defensive player who has been mentioned as a potential transfer target for Manchester United this summer is Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti, but recent reports could spell the end of their interest before the summer window has even arrived. According to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona want to secure Umtiti’s future by offering him a contract extension before the World Cup begins in June.
The report also claims that the Catalan giants want to increase his buy-out clause from 60 million euros to a figure which exceeds 250 million euros, and if that proves to be the case then United will have no chance of securing his signature this summer.
United have plenty of options in central-defence, but Umtiti could install a level of quality which no other defender at the club can currently boast. If United are to go head-to-head with Manchester City next season they will certainly need to add at least one quality player to their defensive unit, so the news regarding Umtiti is undoubtedly a huge blow for the club.
Mourinho will now need to turn his attention towards other defenders to pursue this summer, as a potential deal for Umtiti seems extremely unlikely on the basis of recent reports.
