Recent reports suggest Newcastle must land Southampton’s £13.5m-rated playmaker this summer

The Newcastle United supporters have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern of late due to their side’s tremendous form in the Premier League.

Rafa Benitez’s side have gathered momentum at just the right time this season and stormed away from the relegation zone with a handful of brilliant results in the Premier League. Plenty of fans and pundits had tipped them for relegation at the beginning of the season, but it appears that Southampton – a side who were hardly even featured in discussions regarding relegation candidates in pre-season – are set to drop into the Championship.

The Saints have endured a truly torrid season which has been characterised by a toothless edge infront of goal and, as such, they look set to pay the ultimate price for their shortcomings with just 4 fixtures left to play. Southampton’s relegation could lead to an overhaul in the current squad as players seek to return to the Premier League with another club, and one player who will certainly be open to the prospect of completing a transfer away from St Mary’s this summer is Sofiane Boufal.

According to recent reports in The Sun, the Moroccan international has been forced to train on his own following a huge bust-up with Mark Hughes. The incident is not exactly an isolated one, as Boufal previously endured a tense relationship with Mauricio Pellegrino and expressed his displeasure at his manager through his celebration after scoring a marvellous individual goal against West Bromwich Albion in October.

Boufal is clearly unhappy within his current environment, so Newcastle should take a chance on the 24-year-old by bringing him to St James’ Park in the summer. Although Boufal’s record of 2 goals and 2 assists from 26 Premier League appearances leaves plenty to be desired, the flashes of brilliance he sporadically displays suggest he is a huge talent waiting to be unearthed.

Under a charismatic and richly experienced manager such as Benitez, Boufal will have an excellent opportunity to thrive and prove that he has both the ability and the mentality to become a success in English football. Considering Boufal’s tarnished relationship with Hughes and the fact that Southampton are staring relegation in the face this season, the path should be clear for Newcastle to sign Boufal this summer and provide the 24-year-old with an ideal destination to kick-start his career.
