Spanish outlet Marca have added a new slant to the Angel Di Maria saga, with the Argentine stating he never wanted to leave Real Madrid and join Manchester United.
United set a British record transfer fee with the £59.7m they paid Real for his services but the winger endured a miserable time in the North-West, calling time upon his stint in Manchester just a year later as he joined Paris Saint-Germain.
Now, in an interview with Marca, Di Maria has reiterated he never wanted to leave the Spanish capital in the first place.
“It was always my intention to stay, never to go, I don’t know much about what went on there behind closed doors, that’s stuff the agents deal with. I left Madrid the way I left but what I took with me was the fantastic moment of that final applause at the Bernabéu, and I feel okay with that.”
United regulars are now grumbling that in hindsight it’s clear this mammoth deal was doomed to begin with but are arguing that he isn’t the biggest flop in Premier League history- instead picking a fight with Chelsea supporters.
