There are some certainties here in the Transfer Tavern, we will never have themed nights, you will never win on the fruit machine, and there will always be strikers linked with Tottenham. Much like a blind man playing darts, the results are essentially random, the player being linked with White Hart Lane today is French striker Bafetimbi Gomis.
Gomis who is of Senegalese descent began his playing career with St Etienne, he joined their youth setup in 2001 when he was 16. He quickly rose through the ranks and first appeared for the sides first team towards the end of the 03-04 campaign. He then spent a year out on loan before returning to St Etienne where he spent a very successful 4 seasons with the club. In July 2009 Gomis moved to arch rivals of his former club, Lyon, in a deal worth £11million. His scoring record has remained solid and he has also been capped by France at international level on several occasions.
Gomis has previously attracted attention from different Premier League clubs, particularly Newcastle United who were very close to moving for the player before he signed for Lyon, well it is now Spurs that are supposedly assessing the qualities of the powerful striker. At over 6′ he is good in the air and is also strong, also not lacking in pace he could be a decent asset in the Premier League. His scoring record is solid but not prolific unfortunately, he has managed 81 goals in 264 goals so far in his career, not to be ridiculed but potentially could be better.
Harry Redknapp will be hoping that with better service the striker will start to score more goals and that at 25 he still has a lot of improving to do, but I am not so sure overall about this transfer story. Gomis is a good player but I am not sure if he is good enough for Spurs, the club have been linked with some quality strikers in recent months and the Lyon man is not as good as the others. The White Hart Lane side will probably have a lot of money to spend again this Summer and should they sell Roman Pavlyuchenko I believe they will look to a top European striker to come in, I am not sure the French striker is that player.
Spurs are a side that are improving and I think they will probably be aiming higher than Gomis, they could do far worse, but I am not entirely certain that this transfer is overly likely. Reports today suggest that Roberto Mancini may be looking at replacing Carlos Tevez with Jermaine Defoe so maybe in that case Spurs may look at Gomis to replace him, but to be honest the less said about that transfer story the better.
Tottenham are one of those go to clubs at the moment when it comes to transfer rumours and this is another one that I simply don’t see happening. Maybe I will be proved wrong, only time will tell, but I believe the club can do a lot better.
