Dutch daily De Telegraaf are reporting that Heurelho Gomes could be on his way back to PSV. The Tottenham stopper hasn’t done a lot of stopping in recent months after making a succession of howlers in big games for the North London club. After being dropped for Cudicini for the game at Eastlands, it looks like Redknapp has had enough and Gomes could be on the way out.
North London has not been the best place for keepers this season with both Spurs and Arsenal realising how crucial a reliable man between the sticks really is in football. There were many factors in the downfall of Spurs in the Champions League after an incredible run to the quarter finals but Gomes didn’t do them any favours. Nor did he contribute much, in a positive way that is, to the challenge for fourth at the climax of the season. The club just fell short this season and it looks as though Gomes’s career in England might have come to an end.
PSV Eindhoven are set to offer the Brazilian a way out this summer. The Dutch club want to bring him back to the club in order to establish a reconnection between the players and the fans. Gomes was a real crowd favourite at his time in Eindhoven and wasn’t sarcastically cheered at whenever he made a save, as is the case at White Hart Lane.
Sentiment might not be enough for the club to bring back their old keeper however with wages being an issue this time round. PSV have failed to qualify for Champions League football next season meaning they will not be able to offer a lucrative contract to any incoming players. Another option could be Bayern Munich who have shown an interest in the keeper.
Heurelho Gomes has shown two sides to his game in his time in England. There have been moments of brilliance which has achieved him heroic status at the Lane but his reputation has been overshadowed by the other performances. These sorts of performances happen less often but when you are a goalkeeper it is the horrible times, the howlers that define you. Gomes has been exciting to watch and has been a real character at Spurs but it looks as though his time in England may have come to a disappointing end.
