Uruguayan centre forward Diego Forlan may be leaving Atheltico Madrid for the Bernabeu in a deal worth €18million.
The world cup star has been offered to Real Madrid who may be looking to offload French flop Karim Benzema who has only managed 36 appearances for Los Galacticos since his big money move from Lyon.
The offer will certainly put Italian giants Juventus and Harry Redknapp’s Spurs on red alert, both of which have been monitoring movements regarding Forlan for some time.
But is it a good move though? In GBP €18million is worth roughly £15.5million and Forlan turns 32 next May. He’s probably a few years late on the peak of his career with last summer’s World Cup being the pinnacle, but where will he go from here?
In my opinion, Spurs need a young injection of talent to support Jermaine Defoe. Someone who can understudy to the England striker and can learn to work off Crouch or Pav. Furthermore, for all of Forlan’s talent, his time in England was difficult and he never really proved a success here.
Forlan would also expect to be a key squad member at virtually any club he arrived at now. Could you see Spurs dropping Jermaine for Diego? It would surely be Crouch or Pav that would have to make way, but I’m not convinced two out and out strikers would work so well given the style of attack play used at White Hart Lane.
Finally, how many years has he got left in him? If you ask me, I think this is an attempt from Athletico to grab as much money as they can for him whilst the iron is hot. Strikers rarely last long after they hit 33 thus giving Spurs only two years of his services. Having said that £15.5million is a drop in the ocean these days in football.
If I was Diego I’d want to stay at Athletico, where I was a hero and regardless of a few duff games, I would still be loved. If given the choice, Juventus would definitely be my destination, where older strikers are loved with Iaquinta and Del Piero both over 30. Diego might even be considered a young buck at the Olimpico di Torino.
It would be exciting to see Diego Forlan don the colours of any new club. But for Tottenham fans, I’m not convinced it would be a logical step forward.
