Harry Redknapp’s first priority in the summer will be to reinforce his defence with a £15 million bid for Per Mertesacker. The tall German, standing at 6 ft 6, is seen as the ideal choice to partner Michael Dawson in the heart of the Spurs defence.
With Jonathan Woodgate constantly out, possibly heading for a summer exit, and Ledley King never consistently fit, Harry knows more options are needed.
Redknapp has had the player watched on numerous occasions and has seen him first hand when the two sides met in the Champions league this season. The Werder Bremen star is a regular in the national side with over 60 caps to his name. Known for his aggressive but fair style of play, he is seen as someone who could comfortably adapt to the English game.
While having suffered from a couple of serious injuries in the past they are not considered long term problems. There is no doubt Mertesacker would be interested in a move to White Hart Lane, Werder Bremen are currently lying in a lowly 13th and facing an almost impossible task to qualify for next seasons Champions League. A move to England would certainly be a step up for the German international.
A few calls to compatriot Jürgen Klinsmann could be all that’s needed to tempt the star to a move abroad. Harry would be delighted to acquire a player with a wealth of international experience. Knowing Redknapp, he may even be able to acquire a deal for cheaper than the £15 million asking price providing the likes of Arsenal or Liverpool decide not to follow up their interest in the player.
