Redknapp looking to add to his defensive ranks with a rather unusual signing..
After being struck by countless injuries to his rear guard last season, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is now on the hunt for reinforcements for the ailing duo of Ledley King and William Gallas.
His search thus far has seemingly yielded the signing of Jan Vertonghen for next to £10 million pounds from Dutch giants Ajax, but he’s not done yet, with the Mirror suggesting that the North Londoners are preparing to rock the footballing world with a move so bold, so seismic, that fans at the Lane will be left counting down the days till the season kicks off once more.
Yes, Swedish powerhouse Jonas Olsson has only 12 months remaining on his current deal with West Brom, and that means he could be available for just £3 million.
At the age of 29 Olsson seems to have reached a cross roads in his career, with the defender currently contemplating his future at the club where he’s made 128 appearances:
“I’ve been here for four years now and perhaps it is not wise to become so rooted in one place.”
“If I want to move back to Sweden when my career’s over, there are a lot of things I have to consider.”
But before Tottenham supporters start celebrating in an excited frenzy over the prospect of their new star signing, they must first live in the hope that the recent splurge of defensive deals aren’t some sort of underwhelming buffer for any suffering to come later in the summer, if Luka Modric or Gareth Bale decide they’d rather work Wednesdays than Thursdays.
For Modric, the rumours are already coming thick and fast as you start to get the impression the brilliant Croat might just be too good for the second tier of European football. However, winger Bale looks like he could be set to try again for his side next season, as they attempt to banish the memories of Saturday’s final sucker punch from their serial tormentors Chelsea.
For now though it’s best to put thoughts of a wretched end to the seas0n to one side, and look forward to the prospect of realising Redknapp’s vision in building a squad capable of competing in both the Premiership and Europa League. Olsson would most definitely come in handy when Shamrock Rovers come calling once more, and could form a mean partnership with Ryan Nelson if the going really gets tough.
