Liverpool fans have been somewhat quieter in the Transfer Tavern during the international break following their side’s testing run of form.
The Merseyside giants drew 1-1 away at Newcastle United last time out to fall seven points adrift of the two Manchester clubs at the top of the Premier League, in turn extending their disappointing recent run, which now stands at one win in just seven matches.
And, as such, the pressure is slowly building on manager Jurgen Klopp, who has been urged by Reds legend Phil Thompson (as per Sky Sports via The Liverpool Echo) to spend big in January in a bid to compete for major honours in the second half of the campaign.
63-year-old Thompson played over 450 games for the club between 1971 and 1984, in which time he won seven First Division titles and three European Cups, as well as the FA Cup in 1974, and back-to-back League Cups in 1981 and 1982.
And the former Reds defender, now a regular pundit for Sky Sports, reckons that, although the club are in need of defenders, Klopp must also go all-out to land a striker in January, namely Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
He said: ‘I do feel that come January we need to improve the defenders and get an out-and-out striker.
‘If Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang became available then he should be on our hit list.’
The Gabon international has scored 133 goals in just 200 games for the Bundesliga club and is widely regarded as one of the best forwards in the world, with eight goals in seven league matches this term further underlining his incredible goal-scoring prowess.
And it’s prowess Thompson wants to see at Anfield, but whether it’s a deal they can get done in the New Year very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: In what has been a testing start to the season at Liverpool, it has been Jurgen Klopp’s backline that have taken the majority of the flack, yet former Red Phil Thompson reckons that a striker is also needed in January.
And the man he wants to see at Anfield is Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, widely regarded as one of the best attackers in world football, and someone Klopp knows particularly well from his time at the Bundesliga outfit.
133 goals in 200 games is an astonishing record and one that would seriously enhance Liverpool’s silverware hopes, but with several other big sides around the continent also thought to be keeping tabs on the 28-year-old, the Merseyside giants could have their work cut out bringing the £58.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) to Anfield.
