Newcastle could be set to go through another manager this season, with the Mirror reporting that Rafael Benitez is concerned about his long-term future at the club. Beyond that, he’s even apparently concerned that he could be sacked by Mike Ashley mid-season, and that’s hard to understand.
Though Newcastle have had a poor campaign so far, there is no doubting that the Magpies have the best man for the job in Benitez.
However, Mike Ashley is a notoriously tricky man to understand, and so you can’t put it past him to sack Benitez in favour of someone else.
Whilst that would be a poor move, it’s one that Newcastle fans should be aware of, and if the owner does go through with it, he simply must turn to Brendan Rodgers as his solution.
Brendan Rodgers has, like Benitez, been there and done it – though in different contexts. Whereas Benitez has more experience at the top of the game, Rodgers is more adept at mid-table teams in the Premier League. This is significant because at present, Newcastle’s goals are to establish themselves as a comfortable Premier League side. Having someone that knows European football is good; but it’s not exactly required.
In Rodgers, Newcastle would find a manager that is a Premier League expert, having built Swansea City up and also made an impact at Liverpool. Not to mention, he’s dominated in Scotland in recent years, which only adds to his record.
Furthermore, he’s also a manager that has relied heavily upon young talent in the past. Mike Ashley’s hesitancy to spend money has been well documented, but in Rodgers, perhaps Ashley would find a boss that is comfortable utilising the developmental system ahead of big money investments.
In truth, Rodgers seems like the perfect candidate for the role. He’s got the experience and he’s got the quality. Sacking Benitez would be a mistake, but Ashley could save himself by bringing in someone like Rodgers.
