This latest bit of news is definitely going to aid that recovery, our friends at the Daily Mail are reporting that Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina has finally put rumours of his unhappiness to bed, and has announced his decision to stay at Anfield for a while longer.
The keeper, who joined Liverpool from Villareal in 2005, was thought to be growing frustrated at the club due to their lack of ambition and their struggles in the league, his love for the supporters and club itself however was never in doubt.
After the sacking of Rafa Benitez last Summer there were strong rumours linking the 28 year old with a move away from Merseyside, his name kept cropping up as one of the possible replacements for Edwin van der Sar at arch rivals Manchester United. The other interesting destination was Arsenal who had supposedly been lining Reina up to end their goal keeping woes, although whether he was any more likely to win anything at the Emirates than he is at Anfield I am not so sure!
These rumours can now however be ended, the goal keeper has declared that he is happy with his lot currently, our friends at the Daily Mail bring us this quote:
“I’m happy and comfortable here, looking towards the future which I think will bring a lot of happiness.”.
That is a clear indication that should all things remain the same Reina will be between the sticks at Liverpool next season, he is clearly sold on the job that Kenny Dalglish is doing and why shouldn’t he be? Their form in the second half of the season has been outstanding, and should they continue in that vein next term there could be some teams worried about slipping out of the top 4, i’m thinking you Arsenal!
How this affects clubs being linked with him I am unsure, Manchester United have a huge list of potential goalkeepers and I am doubtful that Reina was ever a serious option, even if he was to quit Anfield the chances of him signing for their biggest rivals were minimal at best. As for Arsenal, they have some rebuilding to do if they are to remain in the top 4 next season, however I think their young keeper Szczesny looks a pretty decent stopper so again I don’t see this Reina news as being too damaging to them either.
Liverpool fans deserve this news really, it is another sign that things on Merseyside are on the up, and well done to Reina for making his intentions clear, I only wish more players would do that!
