The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for the Blues to avoid a move for Andy Carroll. The persistent rumours linking the club with a bid, then, are bringing the mood down amongst our resident Stamford Bridge attendees.
Fortunately, the Independent provided some respite from the news last week, with the publication reporting that Chelsea are also considering a move for Fernando Llorente – a player that they missed out on signing over the summer. He, of course, made a move to Tottenham instead and has since struggled. But that hasn’t put Conte off – and our landlord thinks that a move makes a lot of sense.
It must be noted, of course, that Llorente has struggled this year, and so it would be a huge risk to sign him. He’s failed to really give Harry Kane much competition going forward, and goals have been very hard to come by. However, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a good signing.
You can’t forget his connection with Antonio Conte. The Spaniard was key under Conte when the pair were at Juventus, and linking up again could be just what Llorente needs to kick on and progress once more. He won a plethora of trophies at Juventus and before that point in his career, and so it isn’t like he’s a one-season wonder. He’s a seasoned veteran, with a proven track record under Antonio Conte, and with a trophy case full of awards.
He’s also just what Chelsea need. He doesn’t really fit Tottenham’s style of play, but Chelsea have lacked a genuine target-man style option in recent years, and Llorente would provide that. Strong, powerful, determined – the Spaniard brings qualities that current number 9 Alvaro Morata sorely lacks. Given his poor form, and the fact that he is 32-years-old, he’d also be pretty cheap for Chelsea.
He’d be a short-term fix, sure, but that’s all Conte needs right now. This move would be great for the Blues.
