Release clause confirmed in potentially key development in Liverpool defender chase

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s trip to struggling Swansea City in the Premier League this evening, what with the Reds going into the clash off the back of an 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have not tasted defeat since their 4-1 thumping at the hands of Tottenham back on October 22, instead winning 13 and drawing their other five games to move above Spurs and their North London rivals Arsenal into fourth place in the Premier League table. And with the Merseyside giants becoming the first team to beat Manchester City in the league last week, confidence will be high among the squad ahead of this evening’s trip to South Wales to face a Swansea side six points adrift of safety.

Consequently, there are many upbeat and buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern at present, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Calcio Mercato, which details a potentially key development in the race to land reported Reds target Stefan De Vrij.

The 25-year-old currently plays his trade at Italian giants Lazio and has done so since 2014, in which time he has managed 95 appearances for the club, 24 of which have come this season in their run to third place in Serie A.

As such, interest has been rife in the centre-back with Barcelona, Juventus, and indeed Liverpool reportedly keen on his services, although it does appear that the Netherlands international is to pen a new deal with the Italian outfit.

However, reports suggest that this deal will include a €25 million release clause, with the club’s sporting director Igle Tare saying: ‘The release clause in de Vrij’s new deal is not only valid for foreign clubs, but for everyone.’

And with €25 million hardly an overwhelming figure for a supremely influential ace, Klopp could well look to pursue his interest in De Vrij in the summer in a bid to possibly bring him in alongside compatriot Virgil van Dijk.

Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool spent £75 million on Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk a few weeks ago in a bid to bolster their backline, and indeed turn them into genuine Premier League contenders.

And manager Jurgen Klopp may well look to continue strengthening his options with the signing of fellow Netherlands international Stefan De Vrij, who has played a big part in helping Lazio make the Europa League this season, and indeed rise to third in Serie A at present.

And although the 25-year-old is set to pen a new deal at the Italian giants, it will reportedly include a €25 million release clause, a sum of money unlikely to deter some of the top European clubs thought to be chasing his signature, namely the Reds, Barcelona, and Juventus.

And with Liverpool clearly possessing the financial resources to lure a player of that calibre to Anfield, it’s a move they must seek to get done in a bid to strengthen their Premier League hand even further.
