Chelsea fans are nodding in agreement here in the Football Transfer Tavern after the latest claim from BBC Sport.
The publication claim that new Roma signing Ashley Cole thinks English players are afraid to move abroad.
After considering that claim, along with having a laugh at Cole’s ambitions to learn Italian, we think that he is right, and there are very few English stars who even want to make it abroad.
Our landlord notes that even if we look at transfer rumours this summer, no English players have been linked with a move outside of the Premier League and that speaks volumes.
“English players are probably afraid to come abroad, they’re in a comfort zone in England,” claimed the former Chelsea left back and the majority of our punters have to agree.
The likes of David Beckham and Joe Cole may have done it but we think that more of our current crop need to do the same.
One of our punters points out the sheer amount of foreign players who are looking to make a move to the Premier League.
Even today in the tavern we have been discussing the fact that Angel Di Maria, Sami Khedira and Edinson Cavani are all keen on getting a transfer to the top flight of English football – and that speaks volumes.
Chelsea fans. Do you think Cole is right? Has he any chance of learning Italian? Do any of our current crop have a chance of making it abroad? Let us know your thoughts below.
