Relegated £7.2m-rated Bundesliga star would be an ideal signing for Newcastle United

Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are trying to enjoy the remainder of the Premier League season with Rafael Benitez set to extend his stay at the club and deliver European football next season.

The Magpies seemed in danger of relegation at one point during the season but turned their form around to rise up the table quickly. Although they are safe, they remain too far behind Burnley and Everton in the race for European football. The club remains up for sale with Mike Ashley actively looking to relinquish control. However, the hefty price tag has so far deterred any suitors from taking their interest further.

Benitez must be backed in the transfer market if Newcastle are to challenge in Europe next season with the squad desperately lacking some new recruits. With transfer funds likely to be limited, the Spaniard must search for some bargains when the window reopens.

Over in Germany, Cologne have been relegated from the Bundesliga, and many of their stars were linked with an exit. However, both Jonas Hector and Timo Horn have decided to stay at the club despite interest from Premier League sides. One man who could be set to leave is Jorge Mere.

The centre-back, who is valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, joined the club last summer from Sporting Gijon. The 21-year-old enjoyed an excellent season in Spain before making the switch to the Bundesliga. However, following their drop to the second division, Mere could be moving again.

Despite their relegation, Mere enjoyed a decent season. He has won more tackles and made more interceptions per game than all of Newcastle’s current defenders according to Squawka. As well as this, Mere has also retained a higher pass completion ratio this campaign.

Potentially available on the cheap, the Spaniard could be a great signing at an even better price.
