The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for Toby Alderweireld to return to action. The Belgian has missed a large chunk of the season through injury, and it’s fair to say that Mauricio Pochettino has missed him.
However, perhaps a bigger issue than his absence has been the ongoing uncertainty regarding his future. Though Tottenham have tied down a number of their big players to new deals, Alderweireld’s contract is set to expire in 2020 – and that’s a real problem for the Lilywhites.
Unfortunately, then, the latest update from reliable Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur is unlikely to fill fans with hope. According to Terreur, Alderweireld has held talks with the club regarding a new deal – but an agreement has yet to be reached.

This is a real problem for Spurs, as Alderweireld is one of their most important players. A rock at the back, the Belgian centre-half has built a fantastic partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen – and his long-term retention is, as a result, crucial for Spurs.
However, at this point, his future is still uncertain – though you’d imagine that tieing down his future will become priority number one for Tottenham once the transfer window closes.
Alderweireld is so important to this team, and signing him down for a long-term deal will be as important as any major signing for the Lilywhites.
The fact that talks have happened does suggest that both parties are keen, but an agreement – it seems – won’t be easy to secure.
