Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern will want to see some movement from their side this summer if they are to retain their place in the Premier League once again.
The Magpies will need to strengthen their squad if they are to replicate last season’s incredible form and Rafa Benitez will be keen on bringing a number of players through the door of St. James’ Park in the next few weeks.
However, according to reports in the Newcastle Chronicle, the Spaniard has already come to terms with the idea that one of the players he would ideally like to keep in the north-east is set to depart. Mikel Merino is wanted by a number of clubs back in his homeland and it is believed the midfielder is desperate to return.
Benitez has not given up hope on trying to convince the 21-year-old to stay, however, he could accept that it may have to happen, especially if they can get a fee in excess of £10million for him this summer.
It does not really come as a surprise that the Spain Under-21 international wants to leave, as he has failed to make a real impact in the side following his move last summer.
Merino started the season well, however, an injury stalled his progress and then found it difficult to get back into the side, having made just four appearances, with the majority as late substitutions in the final few months of the campaign.
Should Newcastle get £10m+ for him, the locals in the Tavern would be expecting the club to bring another central player to the team that would hopefully have a bigger impact than he did.
